Analog Photography frequently asked questions

Where can I get my camera fixed?

Amsterdam Camera Repairs will work on all types of cameras and has pickup/dropoff locations in Amsterdam and Delft (at fotohandel delfshaven), more information on his website.

Airports, will x-ray/ct ruin my film?

It depends on two factors. How much you care about details and what kind of film/travel. NEVER put film on checked luggage, the baggage goes through a very strong cat scan that will obliterate your film. If you’re a hobbyist carrying below 800 ISO film, the advice is to not even bother on most airports including Amsterdam.

Because this is a contentious issue within the photographic community, we’ll not spend too much time discussing here and instead, give you some resources from the photographic community:

  • This video from BryHong shows his experience with travelling with film scanning through LAX, CDG, MAD, ZRH. Some film had up to 7 scans during the trip, he claims to see no effect. (Film was inside a JCH case or camera)
  • Carmencita Film Lab made a video going through scanners in Barcelona and Amsterdam where they saw effect on their film.
  • This forum post on photrio.com collects information from manufacturers and other sources.

Important: None of the youtube videos did a comprehensive test and the evaluation of results is at best biassed. Don’t mean they’re not correct, they’re just not definitive or quantified. You should see the result they got and decide for yourself if that is good enough for you.
